Welcome to the National Portrait Gallery
The NPG's story began in 1856, over 150 years ago when the original founders of the Gallery decided to start collecting the portraits of 'the most eminent persons in British history'.
The role of the NPG remains the same today – telling the story of the nation through the people who shaped it. Following three years of closure that saw the most extensive redevelopment of our building since 1896, we're excited to have reopened our doors this year.
Hear from our Director Nicholas Cullinan as he shares more about this transformation – which included a complete rehang of our Collection combined with the refurbishment of the building.

A day in the life of the National Portrait Gallery
Here we open a window into the wonderful world of working at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Staff have been captured going about business as usual, but as you will see, nothing is ever 'usual' at the National Portrait Gallery. This behind-the-scenes portrait of the ever-happy and hip-shakin' NPG team was a total joy to produce.
Massive props to our amazing editor, Jane Duong (and this isn't even her day job...)

Modern portraits at the National Portrait Gallery on The Art Channel
The Art Channel visits the National Portrait Gallery in London to see how artists making Modern portraits are adapting this historic medium to reflect life today. The film begins by examining a Tudor portrait of Elizabeth I and establishes it as a comparison with a photographic self-portrait by Gilbert and George, a painting of Margaret Thatcher by Paul Brason and a photograph of Germaine Greer by Polly Borland. We finish by exploring a portrait bordering on abstraction by the painter Howard Hodgkin.

Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!
